A free, open-source engine for The Settlers IV — History Edition: all four tribes and the Dark Tribe, the campaigns and add-ons, computer players, saves. Linux, Windows and the Steam Deck.

Multiplayer runs over Warpzone with private room codes: dropped players reconnect into their own settlement, a crashed host is replaced by the next player, network games are autosaved on every machine, and desyncs are repaired instead of ending the game.

You need your own copy of the game; OpenS4 contains no game data. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Ubisoft or Blue Byte.

You need: your own The Settlers IV — History Edition (Ubisoft Connect) or Gold Edition installation

OpenS4 0.1.0 preview

2026-10-17 · on GitHub

First public preview of OpenS4, a native engine for The Settlers IV (History Edition, all add-ons).

  • Linux x86_64 (also the Steam Deck): opens4-0.1.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz (built on a glibc 2.39 system)
  • Windows x86_64: opens4-0.1.0-windows-x86_64.zip

No game data is included. You need your own copy of *The Settlers IV — History Edition* (or the Gold Edition). OpenS4 finds common Ubisoft Connect, GOG and Wine/Proton installs by itself; otherwise set S4_DATA to the game folder (the one with Gfx/, Map/, GameData/). The Warpzone launcher finds the files and installs OpenS4 for you.

What works: single-player maps, campaigns and tutorials with briefings, all tribes including the Dark Tribe, computer players, saves; multiplayer over Warpzone with private room codes, reconnect into your own settlement, host migration, network saves any player can host again, and automatic desync repair.

Early development: expect rough edges. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Ubisoft or Blue Byte.
