Warpzone

The Settlers II: Coop

The Settlers II campaigns together: many players, one tribe — on one TV or over the internet.

Warpzone support coming
Project page

A fork of Return To The Roots in which several players run one tribe together, locally with controllers or online, with a controller-friendly front end and a Steam Deck installer. Linux and Windows.

Warpzone adds rooms without port forwarding, and a mod archive for maps, scenarios and campaigns.

You need: the original The Settlers II data (GOG installer or CD) — the installer extracts it

  • Campaigns and saved games played online now use the full-screen party page too. Whoever joins plays the host's tribe together with them - also without ticking "play together", when the game has no free tribe left. Co-players see every tribe, who they play with and the chat; the host's Start gives every tribe nobody took a computer player. A saved game keeps its saved tribes, and the ones past players had stay open for whoever joins.

  • The World campaign shows its original world map again when you pick a mission: continents you cannot play yet are dark, conquered ones carry a flag. Click a continent, or move between them with the D-pad, to choose its mission; the list beside it follows.
  • Controller hints now show real Xbox-style buttons in the game's pixel look instead of coloured text boxes: A/B/X/Y, LB/RB, LT/RT, View, Menu, the sticks and the D-pad (with just the arms you can press lit), both in the bar under your screen part and at the bottom of the menus.

  • New for controller players: a side panel. Switch on Options → Controls → "Controller side panel"; then Back opens it on the right of your own screen part. LB/RB switch between Buildings (how many of each, how productive, and A takes you to one), Stock (every ware and person), Statistics, Post office and the Menu. B or Back closes it. Mouse and keyboard keep the usual windows.
  • Online games now use the full-screen party page too, for the host of an ordinary map and for everyone who joins one: a card for every tribe shows who joined and whether they are ready, there is a chat line, and the host sees how others can join (address and port). Players change their own colour, people and team with the controller or a click and press Ready; the host's Start waits until everybody is ready, can remove a player who holds the game up, and can allow co-players. Open tribes nobody took are closed at the start or get the computer players chosen under Rules.
  • Started from the Warpzone launcher, the game takes the Settlers II files the launcher found on its own: on Linux and the Steam Deck an installed copy, a CD or the GOG installer, on Windows an installed copy.
